Ramadhan Bazaar @ Shah Alam Stadium, Seksyen 13

I guess being a Malaysian, it goes without saying we enjoy food. We have many different kind of food for different occasion, and what more its the Bulan Ramadan now. In Malaysia, Bulan Ramadan, or rather known as the Puasa month has a different meaning to the Non-Muslims – the bazaars are now open for business!

Of course I know its a little too late for me to enjoy my Ramadhan Bazaar experience, but hey I was a little caught up with work and studies, and now being in the last week before Hari Raya, I was lucky to be able to at least attend one bazaar.

It wasn’t just any bazaar. It was (according to most, myself included) the BEST bazaar in Selangor – The Ramadhan Bazaar over at the Shah Alam Stadium, Seksyen 13. =D well, I guess this would be my last for the year, at least till the next Bulan Ramadan in 2010.

Having found out about the bazaar few weeks back, I guess Ying Wei and I didn’t have time to enjoy ourselves with it. So with Ren Yau, my fellow cellgroup member finally freed of his finals, he dragged me along with Pei Yi towards Shah Alam to witness the greatness of the BEST bazaar in town.

True enough, it was an eye opener. Smack right in the middle of the car park of the stadium, it was a really large bazaar, with it taking up 3 lanes of quite a substantial length.

We reached the bazaar around 5pm, so it wasn’t really crowded yet, but as it got later, the place really gets hard to walk since you might probably have to squeeze through people to breathe.

Right on to the food, now Ramadhan Bazaars have pretty much common food no matter which you go, namely the satays, the ayam rendang, murtabaks and so on, but what makes this one at the Shah Alam Stadium unique is the variety of food they sell.

Quite a number of stalls selling char kuey teow, mee goreng and what not. Not to mention the Roti Johns too, seem to be quite the popular there. Nope, I didn’t buy any Roti Johns nor char kuey teow though =d

There were also huge sausages. Okay, not huge. Long. Wait, that didn’t sound right either. Gaahh but you get the drift. Nothing special, but I don’t think you see these out in the market often.

Well, if you can’t find grilled chicken wings in a Malaysian bazaar, you’re not in Malaysia. Haha! I was looking to try the more unique selection, hence I decided against eating them though Ren Yau and Pei Yi had their share of chicken wings as they drew ‘first blood’ in our spending mission.

I couldn’t resist the sight of satays! I bowed down to my urge at the end of the day and bought some delicious satays home. They only cost RM0.50 per stick!

Did I mention there were many stalls selling murtabak around? Well on the surface most of them look the same, but there was this particular stall that drew my attention. Albeit its pricier than the rest, its murtabaks were HUGE!

Of course it comes with the usual selections, Murtabak Ayam, Murtabak Daging. It also comes with Murtabak Special + cheese. They had this on their menu which was called Raja Murtabak. Not sure what it was as it was kinda out of my budget, but I guess it must be something bigger then lol.

One thing if you noticed about the drinks, was the variation in colours they came in.

I thought I was looking at colour pencils till it hit me that I was in a bazaar. LOL! Watermelon, bandung, sweet corn, keladi, etc you name it, they’ve got it!

There were lots of cendols around too. These guys were selling them in jugs! Didn’t check out the price since I didn’t had cendol in my mind.

Say hello to Ayam Perciks! Okay, it wasn’t that great, perhaps some other stalls might taste better, since there were a number of stalls selling ayam percik too. This particular one, wasn’t that savoury. It was tough meat to chew too! RM3.00 per serving.

I passed by a several stalls with nasi briyani and the usual stuffs to go with it. One thing that fascinates me was the presentation of the nasi briyani in their stall.

Was tempted to try them, but I figured getting any rice-based items would stuff my stomach real fast I couldn’t try other things then.

Probably the main highlight of our expedition was the stall that sells BBQ skewers!

I probably don’t have to elaborate more when you need to wait like 10 minutes before you’re being served, thanks to the large crowd surrounding the stall!

The smell, the looks, everything just draw you in. Given their popularity, I guess its only natural they charge you a premium for that. RM5.50 per stick if I wasn’t mistaken. Of course there were other choices on their menu as well!

I guess that concludes my 2009 Ramadhan Bazaar experience. One thing you gotta take note though, the stalls may sell fancy food, some stalls have pretty serious hygiene issues. I got turned off by many stalls that sell pretty decent yummy food because flies were having the moment of their lifetime.

Heck, even the flies there look fatter. I’m serious! Well, so people, choose the stalls wisely!

Then again, Ramadhan bazaars end in like 2 days time xD so if you have time to spare for the remaining two days, why not make your way to the Shah Alam Stadium at Seksyen 13, Shah Alam.
