Sesame Street

My parents believe in the power of the television. And the sponge-like mind of a child. According to my mum (I have no proof to substantiate her claims), I learnt all my alphabets from sesame street alone. And the Sound of Music would be my afternoon siesta.

I can still remember the remnants of those tapes lying the the drawers of my living room cabinet. They contain recordings of the weekly Sesame Street airings that my dad used to record for the purpose of my ‘education’. It surely hell worked. Not only did I obtain a firm grasp on those romanic letters, but till this date, I can still vividly remember the songs that I’ve watched.

Cookie Monster was my favorite character. [First from the left]

His raucous voice wouldn’t fail to crack me up as he belts through his daily obsession with his beloved cookies. And how his “couldn’t give a damn about anything but cookies” reminds me of Sarven.

I have a confession to make. At times, I would just go on youtube and watch one of the latest episodes of Sesame Street. It’s my guilty pleasure; an association with a childhood memory that doesn’t easily die. Somethings just retain their charms.

If anyone of you ever wondered how I learnt the letter ‘C’, I owe it to this:

Now I watched as the time passed by, one generation give way to another. It’s now my cousin’s turn to educate his daughter with Sesame Street. I couldn’t help but wonder, would she turn out just like me? 15 years down the road, would Sesame Street tunnel a comfortable sphere in her serene existence?

That’s for the future to answer. But as for now….

Let’s just enjoy the show.
