How To Increase Platelet Count?

Health — By Kok Kuan on March 11, 2009 at 12:46 AM

Dear readers,

As mentioned in my previous post, my sister’s platelet count dropped to the critical zone a few weeks ago and it went up to a stable condition. However her latest blood test results recently showed that it had dropped to 76 which is not a good sign at all.

If anyone knows or have heard of any ways to increase the platelet count, please leave your suggestion or comment here. No matter whether it is a home remedy or medication, all are welcomed.

Thanks for everything, your suggestion and comments will be appreciated.

Thank you.

A search on the internet would provide pills that are marketed commercially. When I had dengue, I drank a few glasses of blended papaya leaves. Ugh. Might help.

  • Jian Wei says:

Drink papaya leaves. That’s what most people have done and most people will recommend. Though, I’m sure Christopher will second me on this, the consumption of such product would be highly unpleasant.

  • Sarah says:

These were the results of a quick google search:
-Like what Jian Wei and Christopher said, the bitter papaya leaf juice has got to be the most effective remedy for an almost immediate increase of platelet count (although it takes some effort to drink it up =)).
    - Some also recommended patients with a low platelet count to eat beetroot, potato skin, red meat, apples and green leafy vegetables
    -Necessary vitamins: Vit A, C, E, K, B17

Here’s a link which tells us how to prepare papaya juice =):

Hope your sister gets well soon!

A med tech advised me to take as much as vitamin C as I can because it can increase my platelet count. I had dengue last week and it dropped to 91. I started drinking vitamin C, 2 capsules every 4 hours (works for me) and my platelet went up to 110 the following day and I was discharged. Vitamin C is water soluble, no need to worry about overdose. Just make sure you don’t take it for more than 2 weeks. God Bless

  • Kok Kuan says:

    Thanks Nicole. God bless too.

  • noel says:

where do you get papya leaf juice? how much do yoy need to drink ?
My wife is haveing problems with chemo treatments do to low platelet counts.
    thanks

  • Christopher says:

    Hi Noel,

I don’t think you can get papaya leaf juice off the shelf as it is a terrible item to market – it tastes extremely horrible. If you can find anyone with a papaya tree, just ask for some of the leaves and blend it.

How much? Not very much, maybe 300 ml or less. I don’t know whether it depends on the individual too. I took about that amount a day when I had dengue.

    Thank you.

  • Kesha says:

    Hi Christopher,

I just wanna know if the papaya leaves can be poisonous?? 1st, we have to clean the leaves den cut of the stem rite? den we blend it….are we supposed to mix any water??

  • Jhune says:

Hello guys i don’t think papaya will to increase platelet other cases, the papaya leaves will help only the dengue case. because papaya leaves juice will help to control your fever if you have dengue. the platelet will drop if you have a high fever.

i have been diagnose for ITP 2003. my platelet went down to 1k last 3 weeks and i am on predisone 80mg, now my platelet 20k. struggling and fighting this auto immune disease. and also try to eat the watercress and drink sweet potato tops.

  • Christopher says:

Kesha, My apologies for my late reply. By nature, I suppose that the papaya leaves are not poisonous. It is always best to clean the leaves and cut the stems of before blending too. It is not a necessity to add water to the juice but if the taste is unbearable, sure, add some water or maybe honey.

Jhune, Hmm, perhaps you have a point there. All I was told when I had dengue was I had to drink the papaya leaf juice to extract my platelet count. Thanks for the enlightenment.

  • Amrit says:

  • Christopher says:

Fred, as for papaya leaves, I am not aware of any side effects to both the mother and the baby. But to be sure, do some research online. For beetroot, I do not have any knowledge on it. Hope that this helped!

  • Kesha says:

Dear Jhune, I have also been diagnosed with ITP 2008. Is yours acute or chronic? I have been taking prednisone for almost a year now…how are your platelets count now?

  • Ilyas Khan says:

I am involving in Hep C, my platelet count become down up to 75,000. Please give me better suggestions to eat and drink to retain my platelets with in the normal range

Ilyas Khan, hey, did you try out the methods discussed above?

  • Fred says:

    Christopher, thanks for the reply.

  • Rachel says:

You can purchase dried papaya leaf from Mountain Rose Herbs. We mix it half and half with peppermint leaf from the same company. If you are trying to increase platelets drink 1 qt tea a day. We have had folks do this with very good results and the tea mixture does NOT taste bad. Papaya alone is BITTER but the mint makes it nice. I use this for my clients with Lyme with reasonable success.
They must drink 1-2 qts daily until symptoms are better.
    Hope this helps.

Vitamin C can’t hurt a human with a properly functioning kidney. It’s water-soluble so it just comes out in the urine if the body can’t use as much as you take.

  • Rahulrr says:

According to some medical sources drumstick leaves, spinach, egg yolk
and citric fruits can enhance platelet count.
If your count is still low

    go for

EFT. Its an ‘emotional freedom technique’ to improve platelet count, even doctors apply it.

  • Kok Kuan says:

My sister with ITP take 3 small bitterground a day and her platelet now is maintain at 200 and above for the past 3 months.

  • joseb says:

Iam just going through Dengue. Spent 5 days at the clinic with 30 count at the lowest. They just gave me saline solution for hydration, tylenol for pain and omeprazole for the stomach. They let me out under my own recognizance, because platelet count was too low. Two days later I am researching and found you. I will know on Monday after the next hemogram, but right now since being released I am taking the following daily cocktail: 1)Guava and Red pepper blended juice, 2)Transfer Factor (12) (kind of pricey), 3)InmunoFeron (8) 4)Sargenor Forte (2 ampules) I feel like I am alive again. I will know the numbers and let you in on it. btw all this given by a regular MD.

  • Kok Kuan says:

Best of luck Joseb. God bless.

Hi Jay, in Malaysia we can find bitter goard in supermarket. Besides that, you can try to find in organic vegetable shop or any place which sell vegetable and fruits.

and his platelets is around 8000 and heomoglobin is 6 and tlc is 1800

If you read the comments above, you can get an idea of some remedies to help your dad. I wish and pray for your dad’s full recovery.

  • sana says:

is aplastic anemia patient used papaya leave juice?any disadvantage…..

  • Christopher says:

    Hi Sana,

Do note that Papaya Leave juice does not have any scientific proof to back its claims to boosting the platelet count. However, it is used as a traditional remedy over here in the east. I myself have consumed it.

I can’t say for sure whether it will work for an Aplastic Anemia patient. The rule of thumb is that the Papaya Leave juice will help boost the production of platelets. As for disadvantages, I have never heard of any. Perhaps the bad taste it leaves in your mouth?

    Thank you.

  • Sana says:

for papaya leave juice, is it neccesary to use fresh leaves? if we store leaves in refrigrater then use…

  • Christopher says:

    Hi Sana,

I do not think it is necessary to use fresh leaves if they are refrigerated properly. However, things are always consumed fresh.

    Thank you.

HI, MY NEPHEW HAS APLASTIC ANEMIA AND HIS PLATLETS ARE DOWN TO 14,000. HE IS ON CYCLOSPORINE AND I WOULD LIKE HIM TO TRY SOME OF THESE WAYS THAT PEOPLE HAVE RAISED THEIR PLATELETS BUT I WORRY IF IT WOULD REACT WITH HIS MEDS. DOES ANYBODY OUT THERE KNOW? HIS DOCTOR DOES NOT BELIEVE IN THESE METHODS.
