Enabling Stereo Mix on Windows Vista
Technology — By Christopher on January 17, 2009 at 12:54 AMRemember how you could transmit whatever you are hearing from your computer directly to your friends with the “Stereo Mix” option? Back when I was still using Windows XP, I had no issues whatsoever finding the option. However, after upgrading to Windows Vista, I was searching high and low for the “Stereo Mix” option! Where could it have gone? I asked friends and went online in search for the answer.
First, locate the “sound” icon on the right edge of your taskbar (beside the time display). Right click it and select “recording devices”.

You would be looking at a somewhat similar menu to the one below.

Now, right click on anywhere on the menu. Look for an option that goes by the name “Show Disabled Devices”.

Click on it to enable it.

Observe the items in the list grow. Scroll down till you find the “Stereo Mix” option.

Right click it and enable it!

Cheers! I had such a headache fixing this problem because of my carelessness =D. Hope this helps, even though it is old.

shervin, you can’t use both your microphone and stereo mix at the same time. For instance, you have to either choose “Stereo Mix” or “Microphone” as your microphone input in Skype. Care to explain the need to have both mic and stereo mix?

Alex, first of all, my apologies for the late reply. This guide is written for Windows Vista users.
