Lunch with the Authors

Since completing his A-Levels, Yeo Yao Siang has been cracking his head on which part of the world he should further his studies. In the end, our dear friend has decided to study Engineering in Newcastle University, the United Kingdom. When asked why he did not choose Australia, he stated that because the next intake would only be in January 2009, he would be wasting his time doing ‘nothing’.

The original plan for lunch was to include Me, Wei Ling, Kok Kuan, Ying Wei, Nicholas, Yao Siang, Sarven and Irna. However, Irna, Nicholas and Sarven were not able to make it as they were caught up with either studies or personal matters. Kok Kuan gave a ride to Sunway Pyramid with Ying Wei at the front seat after my classes. We arrived at Sunway Pyramid about 12.30 PM but the rest weren’t there yet. Kok Kuan called Wei Ling to know of her location. She too had arrived but she had to go to the bank to withdraw money first. One of us then called Yao Siang. Guess what? Yao Siang forgotten about the lunch date! He was still at home at that time! Ha Ha! “No worry.” Kok Kuan said. “Yao Siang drives real fast!”. I bet he can’t beat Sarven however!

When everyone was present, the ‘fun’ started. We suggested that Yao Siang treat us for lunch. He agreed to it without much thought. I guess he was ready to treat us lunch anyway. Having Yao Siang footing the bill, Ying Wei suggested that we eat at Shogun. We walked all the way down to Shogun just to stop right in front of it and have a small argument. Well I wouldn’t consider it an argument though. Someone asked, “Why are we wasting time deciding where to eat?”. Ying Wei was quick to reply with “It’s all Wei Ling’s fault. She wanted to eat at Shogun one!”.

I had to chase time so I kept suggesting that we have lunch at Esquire Kitchen. Somehow we ended up in front of Sakae Sushi. Again, the same episode occurred. Wei Ling took one for the team again! Finally, after walking past Esquire Kitchen for about three times, we walked into the restaurant and had our seats. Instead of having individual meals, we had a “family” meal. Yao Siang did the ordering and also considered our opinions on the dishes. I defended my title of being a half-banana instead of a full banana when it came to ordering drinks! I ordered in Mandarin although the “Peking Plum Juice” was in English! Ha Ha!

Having lunch with my fellow high school friends was definitely a blessing and also a moment to cherish with. In fact, this would be the last meal I would share with Yao Siang before he leaves for the UK to further his studies. It was definitely great to have a conversation as well as to poke each other with sarcasm after not meeting face to face for some time. Thank you Yao Siang for lunch and all the best in the United Kingdom! Make sure you don’t get bullied over there!
