Happy Mooncake Festival

Jian Wei

Life has been very busy for me.

For a person who relishes a hectic schedule, the fact that I’m enjoying the weekends is a great sign that something is amiss. I shall attribute this factor to the fact that I’m still managing my transition to a great life here in America.

Sometimes, being a Malaysian brings many taken-for-granted benefits. In this case, I’ll be referring to the multiple festivals that we celebrate back home in Malaysia. And coming all the way here to USA doesn’t mean that we have to put an end to such celebrations that once crafted the smiles on our faces.

I’ll be honest, I don’t really know the origins of the Mooncake Festival in detail. Nor do I care, truth be told. But I do take seriously in what these minute festivals hold and represent. More often than not, it’s a time for friendship, family and a process of reminding ourselves on the things that really matter in life.

More often than not we sometimes, in the pursuit of status and fame, often neglect the elements that give meaning to our glorifying medals, accolades and successes.

Whether its a game of Taboo over Bubble Tea, a game of uno cards (in which I was wrongly accused of peeping into people’s deck), or a cozy Chinese cuisine dinner, these small attributes shape the linings of my values, priorities and life.

To friends and family back home in Malaysia, Happy Mooncake Festival.
