SMK USJ 12 Prefect Installation

The old and new - Ang Jian Wei posing with the juniors
It has been two solid years since I have graduated from SMK USJ 12 as a student and as a prefect. During my service as a prefect for all my years in secondary school, I held various responsibilities such as the PA System, the Block Division and the Prefect Board’s Treasury. As an “alumni”, I received an invitation from Pn. Teo to attend this year’s Prefect Installation. I do not know the exact number of invitations sent out though.

The ceremony was held on Saturday (27/07/08) as a “replacement” for the Hari Raya holidays. Dear Jian Wei had messaged me previously that the installation would kick off at 7.30 AM. As I would be driving to school and his house was on the way, I offered him a ride. Managed to leave the house only at 7.25 AM due to my stomach. Parked my ride outside school. We were still on time! The ceremony did not start as of yet. There, we met Kok Kuan whom was waiting in the Prefect’s Room for company.

My memory of what took place is vague. Apologies if the agenda for the day is wrong. The event kicked off with a march with the passing of the Malaysian and Selangor flag the highlight. Well, you might have guessed what comes next. Everyone was invited to stand and sing three songs - the National anthem, the Selangor anthem and the school song. I am actually quite proud that I am still able to remember the lyrics to the school song! Next, speeches. The ‘highlight’ had to be Jian Wei for we are used to having personnel like Pn. Teo and the school principal, Pn. Foziah taking the microphone. I can’t really recall what Jian Wei mentioned on that day though. Nevertheless it was something different that what we are brainwashed with every time. An applause for him.

Done with the speeches, it was the ‘handing over of power’ ceremony. Right, I won’t go into detail about this but generally the predecessor will pin a tag on to his/her successor. Of course, since we are in a Malaysian and school environment, the boys don’t get to pin tags on girls’ blazers. Boo hoo! The climax was the handing over of the manual book on running the Prefect Board by Nickolai to Thomas. Both of them gave speeches after that. Not to forget the new Prefect Board recited the pledge, lead by Thomas. The assembly was then adjourned. I did not take any pictures during the installation. Why? I am an invited guest. I should give myself a chance to enjoy and relax.

By the time the commotion ended, it was only 9 AM. The performances was to be held at 10.50 AM in a hall. So, with nearly two hours left, there was not much that we could do. We, the ‘alumni’ headed towards the canteen to grab a bite. I was finished with my meal in a short while. Since I had my camera along anyways (duh) I walked around the school looking for scenes worthy to be taken of. I hit jackpot as I noticed the juniors rehearsing their skits. They were done with their skits and quickly left the bicycle shed for another location, which I am not aware of. I lingered around the assembly ’square’ and met some ‘new’ friends.

Went up to ‘Dewan Aura”, in time for the performances to kick off. Had to wait for the VIPs to arrive before hand. Again, speeches. This time, Sarven was cheered by the crowd to give a speech. He did it with fantastic English that had everyone bursting into laughter. There were a total of 3 skits, 1 song, 1 dance and a multimedia presentation. I will not describe the performances though. However, I would just like to point out that if you’re doing a skit, please don’t have the stereotype “The life of a prefect”. Do not make the skits too complicating and requires deep thinking to understand. Savvy?

Refreshments were served after that. I did not eat as I had lunch provided at home. Took a drink anyhow. Mingled with the crowd for a while before deciding to return home. Jian Wei was so into getting to know the juniors that he told me to go home without him. Hopefully he didn’t have to walk under the scorching sun! Cheers!

Hehe. Did any ‘07 prefects attend? I mean Bryan John’s group… >..<
Zero =d
Nyehh… It was an invitation-only ceremony, was it not? >..<
Ah well.. xD
As far as I know, the invitation was handed out to you guys.
Hmm, it was? Well, I didn’t get mine, and neither did russell. Hahaz
It means someone hasn’t been disseminating the invitations ~ xD
Haha~ btw, the pics look great, as usual!=D
no invitations were given out to any of the 2007 batch prefects.
hey !! i was suppose to be in that play xD xD nice pic btw !~~ ariel and carmen was obsessed with the first pic -_____-
Erm, Kunil, just curious as to why we did not get any invitations. At least Bryan John should’ve been handed 1, seeing as he is also part of the family.
SeanC, thanks for the compliments. As to why you guys weren’t handed any invitations, I think it’s best to ask the organiser itself.
Riwern, thanks for the compliments, again.
I’m sure that the installation was a great event. I’m neutral about the fact that I didn’t go (Thomas asked me on Friday if I was gonna turn up); but at least I had a hand in making sure the leaflets looked more professional (read: sucked less? xD) Cheers for Photoshop!
Chris, give the juniors a break with their skit-skills. At least they tried and had the guts (assuming that it was their initiative to come up with the skits, not some “request” by a teacher!) And stereotypical/deep or not, it’s still a display of talent. I remember when our bunch (the current F4) first wanted to perform for the 2006 Prefect Dinner, we were discouraged by the teacher(s) quite a bit. And that’s for a “lighthearted” skit as it is!
I do not think I was being too hard on them.
thx 4 d pic christopher….
well about the invitation, only the ones who organized it will know.
Wai Yee, that’ll cost you RM100 =]
Chris,I’ll share that RM100 with her..Thanks for posting the pict!?!
