Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix Race Day

The student body of my college, INTIMA offered an option to all students of INTI College Subang Jaya to watch the F1 race live at Sepang. Well, since it was a once in a life time ordeal, no need for lengthy thoughts. The answer was “yes, sign me up for the F1!”. There was no competition grabbing the opportunity as a handful of students only knew about it. Perhaps they are just ignorant of the posters posted on the INTIMA office. Serves you right! My friends and I met at college on Easter Sunday at 7.30 AM. We were set to leave for Sepang at 7.50 AM. Before that, I bought myself potato buns for “lunch” at the Kiosk. I brought along 2 1.5L bottles of mineral water, a tripod, and my DSLR with a 18-55mm and 75-300mm lens (Thanks Kyra!).

We were dropped off by the bus at the wrong entrance! We were at the entrance to the hillside stand! Luckily we didn’t have to walk all the way to the K1 entrance, if not, it’ll be a “great exercise”. We re-boarded bus and off we went! I wasn’t shooting much of the “scenery” as I wanted to save my shots for the races. We entered the K1 gate not before observing the sign board that had a no outside food/drinks allowed on it. What happened to my bun and bottles of water? They went through safely. The reason for that rule was so that the vendors at the circuit can burn an extremely big hole in your pocket! A burger costs RM 20, a soft drink RM 5 and an ice cream at RM 5. In short, prices of all items were raised ridiculously. You might argue that since it is at the F1 circuit, the price is justified. However, it is still absurd. I didn’t spend a single dollar there! In your face! Hah!

There were a few other races before the F1 race. From A1 to a bunch of Porsches racing down the track. The most interesting one had to be the Porsche. Cars skidding off the track and turning out of control. The Porsche bearing the Singapore flag was prone to that. Everyone kept cheering for the car when it approached the hairpin, hoping to see a spectacular crash. Of course, it didn’t happen. The car just went on the gravel and returned shortly. Even though I wasn’t here for these races, I still took pictures to “warm-up” prior to the F1 race. Fast forwarding a few hours, the F1 race began at 3 PM. Was hoping for it to rain to “spice up” the race. However, lady luck wasn’t on my side. For those who didn’t have ear plugs, the sound must have been unbearable. God bless you during your old age, hope you don’t turn deaf. I myself was comfortably taking pictures of the cars zooming by. Managed to take some good pictures. Satisfied. To sum it all up, this is the first and the last time I will ever go for the F1 race. Nothing much to be fancied about watching cars zooming past you at high speed for a second or two. Not to mention the “bad” conditions and also the overpriced items.

Japan GT? Sure, I’ll go. Not for the cars though. Heh. I got mild sunburn! We returned to college at 6.30 PM. Cheers!
