Nanyang Technology University – Models of United Nations (DAY 2)
Events — By Jian Wei on February 17, 2008 at 9:28 AMIt’s all work and play at the same time! For those of you readers who missed my previous post (can’t blame you, I am have been saddled with improminence for quite sometime), I was designated to cover the IMF proceedings which was really fun! To give you a general overview on the session:

The IMF in session

From the front view…notice the playcards?
The IMF proceeding discussed on the intrinsic problems that is crippling the Zimbabwe’s economy. It started off pretty much without omphh….more like a puny fly fighting a Airbus 380. Discussions for the first few hours were completely without a SOLID purpose. It’s more talking about individual pieces of jig saw puzzles without fixing the jigsaw puzzles together. What the IMF NTU MUN lacked was the ability to tie the issues together.
Now I can really imagine the frustrations of the chairperson. BUT! For a press it was a field day. All 3 different press couldn’t help put to start taking out our sticks and *poke* *poke*. Articles lambasted the performance of the IMF. However, I have to give personal credit to the delegates for putting up a really good show. It was really like a stimulant of the the real IMF session! Politics were in the air! It was an endless session of power broking and note passing, hoping to reach somekind of consensus.
Take a look at the facial expressions of these delegates…..it’s really REAL. (Mind you…these are all pre-council power broking! See how enthusiastic they are!)
Power broking among delegates from Belgium, Brazil and Italy , the 3 Stars of the event. Notice the gestures!

The Delegate from Italy. He must be thinking: “Why the hell won’t they get lost??” Just kidding!

The Delegate from Brazil. He said, “As I was saying….if you don’t listen to me, Brazil will bomb you!”
But the real star of the event was the Zimbabwean delegate! I was really looking forward to seeing her defend herself. Prior to this council, I thought she was done for. But well…..women are one tough nut to crack sometimes! She really played her role well. Her ‘this is an internal matter’ reply to most of the demands made her the subject of harresment interest from the other delegates, hoping to seal some kind of deal from her.

The Zimbabwean Delegate!

When stress gets to your head! Let’s guess what’s is she thinking: ‘Why won’t this idiots get what I mean??’ or maybe the direct ‘WTF’?
We have to delve in some technical details here. There are 2 types of causes. Moderated caucus and unmoderated caucus. Moderated Caucus is when the chair controls the speaking time and there are real strict rules and regulations: who speaks first, how long, about what etc and delegates have to sit at their places!
But as for unmoderated caucus, one is free to run wild! As in, discussion with no rigid procedures! Really fun! Here is where all the funniest moments were captured as delegates semi-let their hair down.

Notice the difference! Some people claim that unmoderated caucus are actually intervals for them to rest! Which is at some point true. I mean….if the country that you are representing was a puny state, what leverage do you have to make changes right? So sit back and let the big bullies in the playground do the work!

“WHAT???”

Omg! Delegates hypnotised!
I think the Zimbabwean delegate must really hate unmoderated caucuses. I mean….it’s the time when she gets….harresed?? From all sides man: me at the front with a camera, 2 on her right, 1 one her left and 2 on her back.
Zimbabwean delegate donning on the ‘What you want lah macha??’ expression.
The session adjourned to the 3rd Day. Well, it was a really nice event for the first day! Sorry for the lack of pics but I had to type and *snap* *snap* at the same time. So I had my hands tied!
THIRD DAY COMING UP!!
OH YEAH!! Just when you think the session will end when the proceedings is dismissed – THINK AGAIN!

Post-session discussion.
